I’m a fan of the “Best Of” lists, and encourage everyone to disagree or suggest new places that should rival the ones listed. I am also a huge brunch fan – it’s by far my favorite meal. You’re allowed to have something sweet for your main course, yet it’s still permissable to have a champagne cocktail on the side. When I was a meat eater I was all about the sweet entree and a side of crispy bacon (mmmmm) but that is no more! And vege fake bacon? ew. Just ew. New York has a million brunch spots around town. Here are my top 5:
1. Cafeteria (7th Ave & 17th St.) – try the croissant french toast.
2. Sarabeth’s (multiple locations) – NYC classic. One on the Ues, one on the Uws, and one on Central Park South.
3. Clinton St. Baking Company (Clinton St & Houston) – everything here is good.
4. Whym (9th Ave & 57th St) – good for big parties too
5. Jacques (Prince & elizabeth St) – $12 set meal, good eggs benedict
Curly’s 328 E. 14th St. (between 1st and 2nd Ave) New York
A great vegetarian/vegan place that serves delicious and truly delectable brunches. The staff is super attentive, nice and fun. Pros include a small and cozy atmosphere topped with a nostalgic throwback to coloring while waiting for your food to arrive. Try the whole wheat peanut butter banana pancakes and the red velvet cake for dessert. Animal sympathizer or not, Curly’s can satisfy everyone’s palate.
One of my favorites for brunch is Noho Star on Lafayette….been there for years, very consistent. Try the “wake up – shake up” to get your motor runnng.
