Hello world! I would like to take this time to introduce myself, my blog, and to disclose some of my food biases. I am the intellectual eater (in case you missed the header). I am often teased for my effusive ramblings on the intricacies and subtleties of various dishes, and I get a warm glow in my eyes when given the opportunity to debate the merits of Humboldt Fog vs. brillat savarin. I like to wax poetic on the merits of ice cream, haute cuisine, and good cheap eats. I am an intellectual snob at times, but a food snob pretty much all the time. I enjoy cooking almost as much as eating, but am hampered by my Manhattan sized “kitchen.” Granted, I get the awesome pleasure of residing in one of the best foodie cities in the world as payment for my sacrifice.
This blog will be my soapbox to debate the virtues of various ingredients, restaurants, and food experiences. As a New Yorker, the majority of posts will deal with locations in New York, although I hope to be able to add tidbits about previous food experiences abroad. Some of my posts will discuss new experiences while others may be nostalgic reminiscences of food days gone by.
I feel that at this time it would be wise for me to disclose some of my prejudices. I have a soft spot for cheese – and by “soft” I mean a hole as tender and plush as a down pillow. I’m fairly prejudiced towards dairy products in general: yogurt, rice pudding, cheesecake, ice cream … mmmmmmm… If I ever became lactose intolerant I do not know where I would gather the strength to get out of bed in the morning.
I should also disclose that after a lifetime of being a fervent carnivore I have recently gone vegetarian. Technically, I’m a pescatarian, as I still eat fish and seafood. I still love meat, and precious few things can beat a fine prosciutto or Momofuku’s pork belly dumplings, but I am determined to continue on as a veggie despite my family’s heckling. I reserve the right to grant myself a waver on very special occasions. I hope to blog about my decision to go veggie soon, but the basic reasons are part health, and part environmental.
Other likes: morel mushrooms, ramps, tropical fruits (except mango and papaya), crab, lobster, silken tofu, dim sum, tapas, rockclimbing, traveling, speakeasies, bargains, shopping, and the em-dash.
Dislikes: spicy food (low tolerance), asparagus, salmon (unless it’s smoked), negative people.
Please feel free to post comments with questions, suggestions and opinions!
Yours For the Moment,
The Intellectual Eater
